For several weeks following its release in February, Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo was only available to be streamed on Tidal. Tidal, a streaming service launched in 2014 by Jay Z and a cohort of pop music heavy hitters, has spent this year trying draw music streamers away from services like Spotify and Apple Music by making some albums Tidal exclusives. I am not alone in facing this moral quandary. With a sigh and a heavy heart, i followed a link to a shadowy website and watched in excitement and shame as a file named “lemonade.zip” was added to my download queue. These options failing to pique my royal interest, I opted for a different route. I could buy it, but the budget of a college student is tight, and I wasn’t sure if my wallet could handle the extra expense. Sure, I could stream it online, but I’ve always been committed to Apple Music, and I wasn’t interested in supporting one of its competitors. Sitting in front of my computer, I was faced with a dilemma: I couldn’t decide what to do about the new Beyonce album.
